Abstract

Introduction. Cardiac myxomas are rare benign tumors whose indicated treatment is surgical resection. They can generate alterations in the structure of the heart contributing to cardiac diseases. It is described as a disease of low mortality but with not documented morbidity.

Objectives. To carry out a literature review with the report of a clinical case of a patient with atrial myxoma and determine the possible impact of physical exercise and cardiac rehabilitation programs on morbidity and performance of patients with this type of tumors.

Case presentation. A 36-year-old male patient with a left atrial myxoma of large size which caused him progressive dyspnea, who underwent surgical resection of the tumor. Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation was started in the late postoperative period through the prescripción of exercise, evaluation of his body composition and psychosocial follow-up.

Discussion. Cardiac myxoma is a condition which shares oncological and cardiovascular features grouping a structural cardiac alteration mediated by a process of cell replication, cell migration and unregulated chronic inflammation, for which its morbidity can be high. Therefore, from the theoretical viewpoint, cardiac rehabilitation programs could have positive effects on patients with these tumors.

Conclusion. Cardiac rehabilitation programs can be very useful to reduce morbidity and improve quality of life and functional performance of patients with cardiac myxomas; however, this approach needs to be investígated and contrasted with evidence-based medicine.
