Effect of the acute exposure to the hypoxia on the neurovegetative modulation in rest and in exercise.

Abstract

Cardiovascular responses to acute hypoxia show significant inter-individual variability.We hypothesized that the autonomic nervous system plays an important role in this variability.

Cardiac and ventilatory responses to hypoxia as well as the modifications in spectral components of heart rate variability (HRV) were measured in 132 subjects at rest and during exercise in normoxia and during simulated hypoxia at 4800 m (FiO = 11.5%). In all subjects, acute hypoxia at rest significantly decreased HRV (in ms²/Hz): total spectral power (from 3944.8±1855 in normoxia to 3417.6±1889 in hypoxia p<0.05), the high frequency component (from 1389±847 in
normoxia to 1139.5±748 in hypoxia p<0.001) and the low frequency component (from 1319±843 in normoxia to 1169±878 in hypoxia p<0.001). The low frequency/high frequency ratio at rest increased from1.1±0.7 in normoxia
to 1.4±0.9 in hypoxia (p<0.001). These findings suggest that acute hypoxia results in decreased parasympathetic and increased sympathoadrenergic modulation.
